The Canadian Kennel Club updated their registration format on November 1, 2019.
With the exception of dogs registered as Canadian born, all dogs registered after November 1st will receive a 12-character registration number. This number will include a prefix consisting of a two-letter abbreviation of the registration type, a hyphen, and the standard 9-character registration number (two letters followed by 7 digits).
As stated in their announcement by the CKC Registrations division, “Dog’s registered as Canadian born Dogs WILL NOT have a two-letter abbreviation or hyphen in their registration number.“

However, the CKC Shows & Trials division does require that all results for your dog be submitted for Canadian born dogs WITH the CK- prefix.
Their announcement was “With regard to event results, please ensure that all dog registration numbers include the full number, including the prefix if applicable. All registration numbers issued in the new database as of November 2019 include a prefix.
Examples: CK-AB1234567, AK-GU1234567, FD-JE1234567, EN-HJ1234567“

To work within these conflicting requirements within the CKC, we’ve made the decision that all Canadian born CKC registered dogs WILL appear in our system with the “CK-” prefix. This eliminates possible duplicate dogs (one without the prefix and one with).
If you add your dog or an entry without the CK- prefix, the system will automatically add the prefix for you. Don’t worry as there is no risk if your registration papers or CKC portal does not have the CK- prefix, as it’s all the same dog record within the Shows & Trials division at the CKC. It will NOT trigger a duplicate dog record with them.
